MLB Opening Day Last-Minute Trades, Claims, and Signings

In the 24 hours before Opening Day, Major League Baseball has seen a flood of last-minute roster alterations.

Here’s a rundown of all the major stories leading up to each team’s opening game of the 2024 season.

NL West

The San Francisco Giants were active on Thursday morning. They dealt shortstop Christian Koss to Boston on Wednesday, optioned shortstop Marco Luciano, and chose and activated shortstop Nick Ahmed’s contract.

They optioned outfielder Luis Matos to Triple-Sacramento, designated catcher Cooper Hummel for assignment, released Pablo Sandoval, recalled left-handed pitcher Erik Miller, and picked up Landen Roupp’s contract. Right-handed pitchers Alex Cobb and Sean Hjelle have both been put on the 15-day disabled list.

San Diego optioned three pitchers to Triple-A El Paso: Jeremiah Estrada, Randy Vásquez, and Andrian Morejon.

Colorado promoted shortstop Alan Trejo from Triple-A, designated shortstop Warming Bernabel for assignment, and put right-handed pitcher Daniel Bard and left-handed pitcher Lucas Gilbreath on the 15-day injured list.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, the reigning National League champions, have put left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, right-handed pitcher Paul Sewald, and right fielder Randal Grichuk on the injured list while designating third baseman Emmanuel Rivera for assignment.

Los Angeles did not make any last-minute adjustments.

NL Central

Chicago chose first baseman Garrett Cooper’s contract from Triple-A and put right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian on the 60-day injured list, third baseman Patrick Wisdom on the 10-day injured list, and right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list.

Cincinnati was quite bustling. The Reds moved shortstop Matt McLain to the 60-day injured list and put five pitchers on the 15-day injured list: right-handed pitcher Ian Gibaut, left-handed pitcher Nick Lodolo, left-handed pitcher Brandon Williamson, left-handed pitcher Sam Moll, and left-handed pitcher Alex Young. Outfielder TJ Friedl was put on the 10-day injured list, while outfielder Bubba Thompson was brought from Triple A and activated. Yosver Zulueta, a right-handed pitcher, was obtained off waivers from Toronto and optioned to Triple-A.

Pittsburgh signed right-handed pitchers Jared Jones, Ryder Ryan, and Hunter Stratton. The Pirates also called up left-handed pitcher Jose Hernandez and assigned catcher Ali Sánchez and center fielder Canaan Smith-Njigba for assignment. Jackson Wolf, a left-handed pitcher, was also designated for assignment. Shortstop Ji Hwan Bae and catcher Yasmani Grandal were both put on the 10-day injured list. Carmen Mlodzinski, a right-handed pitcher, has been put on the 15-day injured list, while Roansy Contreras is on the paternity list.

The Milwaukee Brewers have put three pitchers on the injured list: Devin Williams, Taylor Clarke, and Wade Miley. Garrett Mitchell, an outfielder, has also been sent to the International League. Oliver Dunn, a second baseman, was recalled from Triple-A; right-handed pitcher J.B. Burkauskas was optioned to Triple-A; and catcher Eric Haase was designated for assignment.

St. Louis completed all of its movements early Wednesday.

New York put three right-handed pitchers on the 15-day injured list: Max Kranick, Kodai Senga, and Sean Reid-Foley.

The Washington Nationals have put center fielder Stone Garrett on the 10-day injured list.

Miami put pitchers Edward Cabrera, Eury Pérez, Josh Simpson, JT Chargois, and Braxton Garrett on the 15-day injured list. Shortstop Xavier Edwards was put on the 10-day injured list, while right-handed pitcher Max Meyer and third baseman Jonah Bride were promoted from Triple-A.

Atlanta picked up pitcher Jesse Chavez’s contract and put Angel Perdomo on the 15-day injured list.

The Phillies put pitchers Taijuan Walker, Orion Kerkering, Michael Rucker, and Dylan Covey on the 15-day injured list. Rafael Marchán, a catcher, was placed on the 10-day injured list.

AL West

The Texas Rangers, the reigning World Series champions, transferred right-handed pitcher Zak Kent to Cleveland for cash. They signed Wyatt Langford, José Ureña, and Jared Walsh from Triple-A. Michael Lorenzen, Jonathan Hernández, and Max Scherzer were put on the 15-day injured list, Nathaniel Lowe on the 10-day IL, and Tyler Mahle on the 60-day IL. They also signed free agent third baseman Matt Duffy to a minor league deal.

Houston put Bennett Sousa, Luis Garcia, Oliver Ortega, Penn Murfee, Shawn Dubin, José Urquidy, and Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list. Lance McCullers Jr. is on the 60-day injured list, while Tayler Scott’s contract was picked up from Triple-A.

Seattle has put pitchers Eduard Bazardo, Matt Brash, Bryan Woo, and Gregory Santos on the 15-day injured list. Emerson Hancock, a right-handed pitcher, was called up from Triple-A, while left fielder Taylor Trammell was designated for assignment and second baseman Sam Haggerty was put on the 10-day injured list.

The Angels put pitcher Robert Stephenson on the 15-day injured list and infielder Michael Stefanic on the 10-day IL.

Oakland put pitchers Luis Medina, Freddy Tarnok, and Scott Alexander on the 15-day injured list, while Sean Newcomb was placed on the 60-day IL. Shortstop Aledmys Díaz is on the 60-day DL, while third baseman Miguel Andujar is on the 10-day list. The A’s chose catcher Kyle McCann from Triple-A.

AL Central

The Cleveland Guardians acquired right-handed pitcher Zak Kent from Texas and optioned him to Triple-A. They also purchased Peter Strzelecki from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash. They put pitchers Xzavion Curry, Sam Hentges, Gavin Williams, and Ben Lively on the 15-day injured list. Pitchers James Karinchak and Trevor Stephan are on the 60-day IL, while shortstop Angel Martínez is on the 10-day. Tyler Beede and Carlos Carrasco’s contracts were picked from Triple-A.

Minnesota put pitchers Jost Staumont, Zack Weiss, Caleb Thielbar, Jhoan Duran, and Justin Topa on the 15-day injured list. Anthony DeSclafani, a right-handed pitcher, is on the 60-day injured list, while Daniel Duarte’s contract was picked up from Triple-A.

Detroit placed right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list and designated Miguel Díaz for assignment.

The White Sox have put pitchers Shane Drohan and Jimmy Lambert on the 60-day injured list. Lefty Sammy Peralta was designated for assignment, while pitchers Dominic Leone, Bryan Shaw, and Jordan Leasure were chosen from Triple-A.

Kansas City did not make any moves.

AL East

The New York Yankees put ace Gerrit Cole on the 60-day injured list, while pitchers Tommy Kahnle and McKinley Moore were placed on the 15-day list. DJ LeMaheiu, second baseman, has been put on the 10-day injured list, as has shortstop Oswald Peraza. They recalled Luis Gil and chose Nick Burdi from Triple-A.

Boston has put pitchers Bryan Mata on the 15-day injured list and Chris Murphy on the 60-day list. Rob Refsnyder and Vaughn Grissom are on the 10-day IL. Lefty Joely Rodríguez was promoted from Triple-A, while righty Naoyuki Uwasawa was optioned to the Florida Complex League.

Toronto has put pitchers Jordan Romano, Alek Manoah, and Erik Swanson on the 15-day injured list. Catcher Danny Jansen has been put on the 10-day injured list, first baseman Daniel Vogelbach has been picked from Triple-A and activated, catcher Brian Serven has been selected from Triple-A, and Yosver Zulueta has been DFA and placed on waivers.

The Orioles have put pitchers John Means and Kyle Bradish on the 15-day injured list. Center fielder Ryan McKenna and third baseman Tyler Nevin were released; pitcher Nick Vespi was brought up from Triple-A; and Jacob Webb was put on the paternity list.

Tampa Bay put shortstop Wander Franco on administrative leave and Josh Lowe on the 10-day injured list. The Rays completed the bulk of their transactions on Wednesday.
